Free Operating Systems - Are they really cheap?

by Simon Albert 2. March 2009 10:02

Linux, the free operating system (otherwise branded as Redhat, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc) is being talked about more and more.  It’s all about the word ‘Free’! Actually there’s nothing free about it.  In fact it’s the most expensive operating system I’ve ever seen – and I’ve seen a few.  It irritates me. Keep away.  Why?

It costs a fortune.
... In fact it costs a fortune and causes stress and frustration
... In fact it costs a fortune, causes stress and frustration and probably won’t do what you want
... In fact it costs a fortune, causes stress and frustration, probably won’t do what you want and might not work with your printer. Or camera, scanner and definitely not with all the software you’ve already bought.
I could go on!

Linux is like a well meaning neighbour who comes round to offer to pop to the shops to save you time and then insists on staying for an hour to have a coffee.  Nice offer matey, but thanks for nothing.
Linux is like a heavy carpet that comes highly recommended and is advertised as being long lasting and great value – and then you find you can’t vacuum it because the pile is too deep
Linux is... well, not for most of us

How does it cost a fortune?  Because time is money and because IT experts and hardware that works costs money.  If you are an IT expert and know everything about Linux then maybe you can get by.  For everyone else here’s what happens:
1. You download Linux on Saturday morning because it seemed like a great idea at the time
2. You try to run it and realise you then have to download the instructions on what to do to install it
3. You see that there aren’t any instructions that make sense, so you spend a day reading blogs and websites.  At this point you see comments from people reporting their catalogue of woes.  Oh yes, there’s no shortage of help out there; but it’s quite simply the fact that a) a solution doesn’t exist and b) the answers are written in Klingon
4. You think ‘is this really going to be worth it’, but stubbornly persist. Afterall, it must be okay –the computer mags say so
5. On Sunday evening, as you slowly realise that your whole weekend has just slipped away, your computer loads into Linux.
6. Everything looks weird – a sort of chocolate brown colour.  Don’t worry – techies love that colour... apparently
7. At 2am you still haven’t been able to get online.  Your Microsoft Office CD won’t install and you can’t find your files
8. Bed.  Tomorrow you will call an IT guy to come round finish it off for you
9. Bobby the IT guy comes round for the day, and for £100 gets it onto the internet and he downloads and install some software for word processing and sets up your email.  He explains that Microsoft Office won’t work but that’s obvious isn’t it – afterall it only runs on Windows.  Plus all your kids games CDs can go into the loft because you’ve got no chance.  That’s okay – you can always buy a games console and a new set of games for the kids – it is only money afterall. The good news is that Bobby’s very impressed with you – he loves Linux
10. Bobby helpfully explains that your printer won’t work with Linux, but the £85 replacement printer he recommends will work fine.  He cheerily leaves you a card as he goes – you’ll definitely be needing him again!

A friend called me last week.  He had just bought a really cheap netbook computer from PC World – it was only £220 but it ‘looks all weird, help please’.  Sorry Richie – that’s Linux.  Sorry to tell you this mate, but the Windows version of this same computer is only £25 more.  You might want to think taking it back and getting a Windows replacement.

Linux exists because a worldwide community of techies have decided that it should.  They’re a great bunch of folk. Well meaning. Very clever, definitely not fans of Microsoft and they love brown.  But you need your computer to just work.  You need to know that you’re not going to have to rely on a select few Linux engineers to help you at every turn.  You definitely don’t want to have to relearn everything you’ve already learned and you certainly don’t want to end up buying another computer just so you’ve got one with Windows on it too.

Microsoft is huge as we all know.  Bags of money and commercially minded.  But do you know what?  They’re rich because they have created something that everyone needs.  They are money driven and know that they will only exist for as long as they listen to their customers.  That means they know what you need and make sure you get it.
And they like blue better than brown.
